Last summer I showed a home in the early evening hours and didn't take the property precautions. I found myself feeling in a bit of trouble. I got overheated to the point of getting dizzy and not feeling safe to drive. I sat in my Air Conditioned car running for a while and then drove myself home. But I learned a lesson from it and want to share that lesson with you... BEFORE you have to learn it for yourself.
In this type of weather it's important to:
- Drink plenty of fluids (avoiding alcohol, sugary drinks and caffeine because they speed up fluid loss)
- Do yard work in the early morning hours or late evening hours
- Wear loose fitting light colored cotton clothing
- Wear a vented brimmed hat or use an umbrella
- Stay indoors (great time to take in an afternoon movie)
- DO NOT leave anyone (pets included) in a parked car
This weather can cause:
- Heat Cramps
- Heat Exhaustion
- Heat Stroke
Symtoms and medical advice for these can be found here.
As for me when I show property in this type of weather I always carry a medium sized cooler in my car with ice and water. I also keep a few hand towels in my car so that if a client seems to be overheated you can wet one of the towels for a cool down and I never schedule more than about 6 homes on a day when the heat is so high. Heat strokes can cause permanent damage and even death. These high temperatures along with the heat index is nothing to fool around with.
I am also, on a personal note, allowing my dogs to stay inside with the A/C all day and waiting until around sun set to let them go out and play, only taking them outside long enough to "do their business" when it's so hot.
So if you are anywhere in the southeast, please stay safe, stay hydrated and take care of your family and pets.
