That was the question that my Grandmother asked me from the back seat of my mini van as we were rolling down the interstate going to a bike-a-thon honoring my cousin Christopher who had died in an accident earlier that year. My cousin had put it together in the town where she attended college and our familiy went for support. Christopher had ridden many a mile in raising money for St. Jude's Hospital and it was only fitting that a bike-a-thon with all contributions being made in his name be held.
So you might think that my Grandmother was tearing up. Nope, that's not it at all. Her baby squirrel "curly" had peed in her purse. That's right my 70 something year old Grandmother told me she had a "pet" squirrel she had rescued in her purse in my car. After all, she couldn't leave it home alone for the day... could she?
As I think back to my childhood ... even though it was years before I had a cat.... I always had fur babies in my life. And even a feather baby or two. My Grandmother was always taking in hurt this or that... rabbit, turtle, birds ect. Once on of my aunts even had a spider monkey.
Even near the end of her life when she was in a nursing home my mom and my aunts kept bird feeders and even a special one for the squirrels to be outside her window. Heck we even opened the window, popped out the screen and brought the stray cat in through the window to visit from time to time. I always took her photos of my puppies ever time I went to visit. So when I think about my love for animals... I inherited it. That squirrel was just one she saved.... there were more and time and time again she would keep them until they were big enough or well enough to let go. I hope she is taking care of my pets up in heaven.
