Funny how the mind works... and why I'm ordering pocket calenders.

Funny how the mind works... and why I'm ordering pocket calenders.

Today I got mail from Maywood, NJ.  It was a sample pocket calender with embossed in shiny gold print...

Compliments of Lane Realty.

When I left the office it was on my desk.  I did briefly do some calculations to see how much it would cost to order some.  But I also remembered I had just seen information on Sheldon Neal's blog about the city of Maywood getting a new website.  I'd even gone just yesterday and looked over the website and even through the "photo album" there (I was hoping I'd find some photos of those cute Neal little boys that I consider my extended family, but no luck).

I hopped over to Sheldon's post and told him that I got mail from Maywood today.  And I always go back and see what he has to say in response to my comments (Sheldon's great like that... if you comment on his blog, he responds to your comment).  He asked "out of interest, what did they want?"

Well...

that sent my mind a whirling and I went and gathered a pocket calender out of my "where I keep important things in a safe place" in my home and was once again looking through the 1940 pocket calender that belonged to my mother's father.  And there embossed on the cover in once shiny gold is says M. S. Shivers District Manager New England Mutal Life Insurance Company.

It has the most interesting facts... including

My Papa wrote in his name, his address, his collar size, his shirt size, his shoe size, his hat size, his glove size, the make of his watch, his weight and his height.  He also added his Buick Sedan was a 1939 and had 8 cylinders.  It asked for SSN and my Papa wrote "no".  I wonder if he didn't have one yet or if he was too smart to jot it down in pocket calender.

The preprinted information on the next few pages is fasinating.  There's a page of "business law".  The last line on that page says "When contracts are reduced to writing, understandings cannot be show which are not in writing."

Other pages include:

  • Interest Calculations
  • Postas Information
  • C.O.D. rates
  • Airway Map of the United States
  • Weights and Measures (and did you know that a ream of paper is really only supposed to be 420 sheets)
  • In Case of Poisoning (at least first is listed "send for a physician" because the rest of it doesn't sound too smart as it suggest for Arsenic you have milk, raw eggs, sweet oil, lime water, flour and water in large doses)  Hmmm
  • List of the first 32 presidents and their age at inauguration
  • List of the 48 States and Capitals
  • Census numbers by the state and major cities from 1920 and 1930 (Both times Georgia had less than 3 million and the city of Atlanta just 270,000 people WOW)
  • Railroad distances between cities
  • ALL US broadcasting stations (also included Canada's World wide)

From here there a few pages missing and it picks up on George Washington's birthday (which was a Thursday)

And on Friday there's a giant TAM written with blue crayon and on Saturday a giant MY in that same child like handwritting with that same blue crayon. (Hmmmmm- wonder if I got the switch for that?)

There are also hand written notations by both my grandparents and even one that I recognize as my Great Grandmother who noted she's added $300 to my Papa's bank account.  I treasure this pocket calender.

Do you keep one?  Do you jot down notes that your granddaughter would love to read 70 years from now?  I know my grandchildren my find these words I've typed on the Internet someday, but wouldn't it mean more if it was my handwritting and they could hold it and put it in the "special place" they keep their treasures in their home.  Wouldn't it be funny if my Granddaughter wrote in that 2011 calender on my desk with a blue crayon?

You know Sheldon... I'm going to be placing an order from Maywood.  I'm pretty sure I'm meant to do so.

Thanks Sheldon, your post lead to some happy memories today and who knows what 70 years from now.
