Former State Capitol Building and Museum in Milledgeville, Georgia

Yesterday I posted about the former Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville,  today I'd like to share a little about the actual old Capitol Building. It's current on the campus of Georgia Military College, but also houses a wonderful museum.

Milledgeville Georgia- County Seat of Baldwin County that borders beautiful Lake Sinclair was THE ONLY city ever built exclusively to be a state capital.  I'm sure many of you might have know that Atlanta Georgia was not always our capital.  Milledgeville Georgia served as the capital from 1808 to 1868.  You can tour the former Governor's mansion which also at one time served as the residence for the dean of Georgia State College and University.   You can also tour the Old Capital Museum which is now located on the campus of Georgia Military College.

Milledgeville's original city plan was 84, 4- acre squares and to this date was the only city in America planned, designed and built as a state capital.

My Donald is a graduate of Georgia Military College and this north entrance to the campus (photo above) was beautifully decorated this past December for Christmas.
We took a nice stroll around campus one evening taking in the lights downtown Milledgeville after dinner. The original Capitol building (photo left) houses the Old Capital Museum.

And just for a little further trivia since there are both spellings in this post... capitol and capital... they are both correct.  Spelled with an "A" Capital is the official city that is the seat of the governments, so Milledgeville is the former Capital of Georgia.  However the building occupied by legislature (federal or state) is the Capitol Building.  So the former Capitol Building houses the former Capital Museum.  (confused yet?)

If you are ever near central Georgia this is something I highly recommend taking the time to visit.
