Veterans Day and what I think about

I've seen some touching words of thanks today. They have come from people with service and sacrifice and others who just love this country and grateful for those who would die to defend it. I even saw an email that one asshat sent someone claiming his statement that military families "sacrifice" was an advertising ploy.   Really?

My grandfather served.  My daddy served.  Neither in war zone, but both during war time. My husband served and yes he was in a war zone. I have a bunch of cousins that served and I have an uncle with his name engraved on that wall in Washington.  Today when saw a photo that Richard Iarossi posted big tears welled in in my eyes as I thought about the one memory I have left of my uncle. I was just 5.  One. Memory. One. Just. One.

I pondered on how many other people have one, few, forgotten or even no memories of their loved ones. How many families don't have their mom, dad, sister, daughter, father, son, brother, husband or wife home.  What kind of hardships does that place on a family. What kind of burden does a child carry when a parent is in a war zone?  What kind of burden does the parent left to run the household have?

Today lots of folks and businesses did nice things for veterans. lots of people had a green light shinning to show honor and support.  But there are 364 other days in the year.  So let all of us take just 10% of those days, 36 days and commit to do something nice for a veteran.  There are a number of ways to help and some of them only take time, not money. Do you have any idea what a visit to someone in a VA hospital would mean to them? Perhaps someone in your SOI knows a veteran at home that could use a hand.  Hero Dogs is one of my favorite Charities. Other important charities are Army Emergency Relief, Wounded Warrior Project and Fisher House .

I'm going to do my part.  I'm going to take my personal responsibility to the level it should be to lend a hand to those who have defended my freedom.

I think about how I or most of us couldn't imagine going into a war and fighting and shooting guns and all that. Bless everyone!

Good morning Tammy. Wonderful tribute, thank you for sharing your post.

I spent part of the day making call to many that I know that have served.

Good morning Tammy! Did not run into many Veterans today, but was able to call a few and remember some who gave it all! Enjoy your day!

Good morning Tammy. Your reflections hit home with me too. Everyday is one to remember, says thanks and do something.

You go girl !   I support and agree with Tammy Lankford that service members sacrifice and so do their families.   We need to support them ALL 365 days of the year and assist them any way we can.   I try to do my part by providing VA mortgages, assembling care packages and donating to veterans support agencies.
