Did you move in 2015? Don't forget to file homested exemptions

If you moved to Putnam County in 2015 and it's now your primary residence and you are not claiming homested exemptions anywhere else then you need to get on down to the Tax Commissioners office at the court house and file. You have to have moved in the home prior to January 1, 2016 to be eligible for the exemption in 2016. You can file anytime between now and the end of March.  But you do not have to wait until next year. You can go ahead a file now although your exemption will not start until next year.

This exemption does not apply if it's a second/vacation home. But if you purchased a vacation home that is a future retirement home then remember to file when you decide to make the move.

Good reminder. Our title reps do it as a matter of course here.

That's a very helpful tip for people in Putnam County, GA. There's a Putnam County NY also but the rules are different.

In California, I think our break is about $7500 off the sales price on which our taxes are based, so it's not such a big deal. But in Minnesota, if you don't file an exemption, you can pay 2/3rds more in taxes, or at least that was the homestead law when I lived there (meaning they really discourage investments). How much do you save in Georgia?

This is such an important thing to remember to do or you might get a not so nice surprise when tax time comes along.

Excellent reminder Tammy Lankford .   Those of us in the industry should drop a reminder to our clients from this past year so they get the maximum benefit.   Who knows, that call could result in a referral because you cared enough to stay in touch.
